Castlevania: The Gothic Platformer
Konami's Castlevania series (1986–present) is the defining goth video game franchise. Dracula's castle as the recurring setting, classical music-inspired soundtracks, Gothic architectural visual design, and the ongoing conflict between the vampire lord and the Belmont vampire hunters — the entire series is an expression of Gothic horror aesthetic in interactive form. Symphony of the Night (1997) in particular is a masterpiece of Gothic game design.
Vampire: The Masquerade
White Wolf's tabletop roleplaying game Vampire: The Masquerade (1991) and its video game adaptations — particularly Bloodlines (2004) — brought goth culture directly into gaming. The game's World of Darkness setting presented a contemporary world where vampires, werewolves, and supernatural beings existed beneath the surface of ordinary life. The social and philosophical depth of the system appealed directly to goth sensibilities.
Dark Souls and the Soulsborne Genre
FromSoftware's Dark Souls series (2011–present) and related titles (Bloodborne, Elden Ring) have become beloved in goth communities for their detailed Gothic architecture, their focus on death and impermanence, their brooding tone, and their willingness to communicate through atmosphere rather than explicit narrative. Elden Ring's landscape of crumbling stone and perpetual decay is essentially Gothic aesthetic rendered as open world.
Other Essential Goth Games
Legacy of Kain, American McGee's Alice, Silent Hill, the Witcher series (for certain visual elements), Diablo, Darkest Dungeon, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, and Dragon Age all have significant goth aesthetic elements. Each expresses different aspects of the goth visual and thematic vocabulary in interactive form.
