Goth Music Festivals — Where Darkness Gathers

Beyond the local club night, goth has a global festival circuit — annual gatherings where the community converges, the music continues for days, and the darkness is, briefly, the majority.

Wave-Gotik-Treffen, Leipzig (Annual — Late May/June)

The grandmother of all goth festivals. Twenty thousand attendees over four days spanning every goth subgenre. See our detailed WGT guide for the full picture. Non-negotiable for serious goth festival attendance.

M'era Luna, Hildesheim, Germany (Annual — August)

Germany's second major goth/dark music festival, held on a former military airfield near Hildesheim in Lower Saxony. Two outdoor stages, several indoor stages, and a slightly younger and more EBM/industrial leaning than WGT. Still enormous by any standard — typically 25,000+ attendees. A more single-site experience than WGT's city-wide spread.

Amphi Festival, Cologne, Germany (Annual — July)

Held at the Tanzbrunnen venue on the Rhine in Cologne, Amphi focuses on the electronic side of dark music — EBM, industrial, futurepop, and darkwave with strong representation. The Rhine setting and the relative compactness of the site create a different atmosphere from the sprawl of WGT and M'era Luna.

Whitby Goth Weekend, Whitby, UK (Twice Annual — April and October)

Britain's most beloved goth gathering, held in Whitby — the town on the Yorkshire coast that Bram Stoker used as a setting for Dracula's arrival in England. Whitby Goth Weekend is not primarily a music festival but a community gathering and bazaar, with live music, market stalls, and several hundred goths walking the clifftop abbey ruins in full Victorian regalia. Essential for its atmosphere.

Convergence, USA (Annual — Various Cities)

The North American goth community's annual gathering, hosted in different US cities each year. Convergence (CV) is a community-organised event rather than a commercial festival — typically four or five days of live music, club nights, and community events. Essential for the US goth scene and an important point of community continuity.

FAQ

✝ Frequently Asked ✝

What is the biggest goth festival in the world?

Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig, Germany is consistently the world's largest goth festival, drawing 20,000–25,000+ attendees annually since 1992. It spans the entire city across dozens of venues over four days of the Pentecost weekend.

Are there goth festivals in the USA?

Yes — Convergence is the US goth community's primary annual gathering, organised by community members and hosted in different cities each year. Cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York also have recurring dark music festival events. Bat's Day at Disneyland (Anaheim, CA) is a notable informal goth gathering rather than a music festival.

What should I wear to a goth festival?

Full effort is both welcome and expected at goth festivals — these events are one of the few contexts where full Victorian regalia, elaborate cybergoth outfits, or detailed cosplay are absolutely standard. Comfort is also important — you'll be wearing whatever you choose for long periods, potentially including outdoor settings. Good footwear is particularly important.

How do I find smaller local goth events?

Beyond the major international festivals, local goth scenes host regular club nights, small concerts, and community events. The best sources: local goth Facebook groups, Reddit's r/goth (which has a megathread for finding local scenes), independent record store flyers, and following local alternative venue social media accounts.
